Street Lighting

THE INNOVATION HUB
LEDWALKWAYTHE LED Walkway at The Innovation Hub as a demonstration and research site offers visitors, municipalities, researchers, academics, and lighting suppliers a unique opportunity to view, experience and engage with the latest energy efficient outdoor lighting solutions.
The system can be centrally controlled and integrated with other services such as public wi‐fi, traffic control, surveillance cameras, loudspeakers, as well as electric charging for e‐cars and e‐bikes. As such, the efficiency and quality of a municipality’s public lighting service could merge area lighting with the “Internet of Things” and may even be viewed as a potential source of additional municipal income through the provision of services such as wi‐fi and charging stations.
Caters For All Target Groups
Municipalities: Municipalities will benefit from visiting the demonstration site if they are planning to replace old street‐ and area lights with energy efficient lights, or if they are considering implementing a tele‐management system. Tours can be booked between 7 and 9 pm to see the lights in action.
Manufacturers: Manufacturers were invited to become involved with the site though a public invitation. The first phase of the LED Walkway saw two developers donating lights and management systems for display – BEKA Schreder (www.schreder.com ) and Envirolight (www.envirolight.co.za). Additional manufacturers and suppliers will be added in subsequent phases. Get in touch with us if you would like to participate.
Academic institutions: Schools, Universities and research institutions can visit the site to engage with the topic of energy efficiency, current research themes in the sector and to see operational lights and tele‐management systems firsthand.
Public: Interested in energy efficiency and seeing how energy efficient lights work? Book a tour to visit the site. The Park is open during office hours (8:00 to 17:00) or alternatively book an evening tour to see the lights at night.
Partners and Initiators
The Department of Mineral Resources
The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) implements the municipal funded Energy Efficiency Demand Side Management (EEDSM) programme that is aimed at supporting municipalities in their efforts to reduce electricity consumption by optimising their energy use.
On an annual basis, the DMRE issues Request for Proposals, inviting municipalities to submit their bids for consideration as beneficiary in the programme.
Selected municipalities receive grants for planning and implementation of energy efficiency measures and technologies for their municipal infrastructure. Targeted infrastructures include wastewater treatment plants and water pumping
infrastructure, buildings, traffic lights and public area lights (streetlights and high‐mast lights).
Many participating municipalities opted to install energy efficient street‐ and area lighting under the EEDSM programme but faced some challenges. LED lighting technology was new, municipalities were uncertain of the quality and operation of the lights and therefore hesitant to invest in the untested technology. For more information on the DMRE and the EEDSM programme, visit www.energy.gov.za
The South African German Energy Programme
The South African German Energy Programme (SAGEN) implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) with funding from the German Federal Ministry for Development (BMZ) collaborates with DMRE on the implementation of the EEDSM programme. The Swiss Government trough the Swiss Economic Cooperation Development organisation (SECO), provided funding to GIZ SAGEN to implement an energy efficient public lighting demonstration project in seven South African municipalities across the country.
For more information on SECO, visit www.seco.admin.ch. As part the energy efficient streetlighting retrofit programme, it was agreed to establish a demonstration site at The Innovation Hub to provide an accessible and informative way for municipalities to serve as a training and development site on various technologies and learn about energy efficient lighting.

The Innovation Hub
The Innovation Hub (www.theinnovationhub.com) is the official innovation agency of the Gauteng Province, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency.
Locating the demonstration site at The Innovation Hub was an excellent solution as the site is accessible, visible, and linked to research institutions like the University of Pretoria and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research.
In 2017, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the DMRE and The Innovation Hub, formally establishing the demonstration and
research site.
